ABOUT

The Straight Answer Your Check Engine Light Deserves

OBD2 Geek exists because getting a clear, honest answer about your car should not require a $120 diagnostic fee, three Reddit threads, and a lucky guess.

OUR STORY

How OBD2 Geek Started

Most OBD2 sites exist for one of two reasons: to sell you something, or to dump a list of possible causes and leave you to figure it out. OBD2 Geek was built because neither of those serves the actual person sitting in the driveway wondering if they can drive to work tomorrow.

The gap was obvious. obd-codes.com owns the code lookup traffic but has nothing to say about scanners. Most scanner review sites recommend everything as excellent because better commissions mean less honest writing. And the people who actually need help get caught in the middle.

OBD2 Geek was built to be the site that does both, honestly, for the person who is not a mechanic and does not want to become one, just wants to make a good decision about their car.

WHO WE ARE

Research-Led,
Not Manufacturer-Led

OBD2 Geek is an independently operated diagnostic resource. We do not manufacture scanners, accept free product seeding as a condition of review, or publish a recommendation without working through the specs, the update policy, the app experience, and the user feedback.

Our content is built from deep research,  manufacturer documentation, real-world user reports, comparative spec analysis, and an honest look at the scanner market across all price points from $30 to $500+.

  • Covers 5 major brands - Autel, BlueDriver, Innova, Launch, Foxwell
  • Full price spectrum - budget $30 through professional $500+
  • P-code library - plain-English explainers, causes, fixes, urgency ratings
  • Vehicle-specific guides for all major makes and models
  • Affiliate disclosure on every page - no hidden commissions

OUR MISSION

What We Believe

"Car diagnostics should not be a black box that only mechanics can open. Every driver deserves a straight answer about what is wrong with their car — without the jargon, the guesswork, or the $120 fee to find out."

We build OBD2 Geek around one principle: give people the information they actually need to make a confident decision. Not a list of 12 possible causes. Not a recommendation to see a mechanic without first telling you whether it is urgent. A clear, honest, plain-English answer  and if a scanner would help, a specific recommendation for one that will actually do the job.

OUR VALUES

Why We Do What We Do

Every decision we make on OBD2 Geek comes back to these principles.

🎯

Clarity First

Every code page, every review, every buying guide has one job: give you a clear answer. Not a list of possibilities. Not a hedge. A genuine recommendation based on the information available.

🔓

Radical Transparency

We earn a commission if you buy through our links. We disclose this on every page. Our editorial decisions are not driven by commission rates, when a cheaper tool does the same job, we say so.

🤝

Respect for the Reader

You are not asking us to make the decision for you. You are asking for the information to make it yourself. We give you that, in plain English, at whatever depth you need, without condescension.

🔄

Current, Not Set and Forget

The scanner market changes. New models, discontinued products, updated firmware, changed update policies. We treat our content as a living resource, updated when products change, not just when we publish them.

📐

Spec Accuracy Matters

A scanner that claims bi-directional control but only does one or two functions is not a bi-directional scanner. We define features clearly and call out marketing language that overstates what a tool actually does.

👥

Built for Two Audiences

Panicked Dave just got his first check engine light. Enthusiast Matt has outgrown his basic scanner. OBD2 Geek serves both, same site, same honesty, calibrated to the right level of detail for each.
